The refurbished Nyugati tér has been inaugurated this Wednesday. At the ceremony Mayor István Tarlós and Zsófia Hassay, Mayor of Terézváros District have made a speech.
- After several decades one of the most dense and crowded squares at Nyugati railway station has been renewed, and with that Budapest became richer with yet another cultural, more liveable, and greener public space, said István Tarlós. He emphasized that the outlook of Nyugati square has not changed substantially since the 1980’s, its structure and style have become objectionable. Over the last decades only maintenance works had been conducted there, thus the refurbishment of the square has become undisputedly actual.
The stairway formerly dominating the whole square is now by far narrower and shorter. He added that thanks to the new pavement the square is brighter, its mechanical infrastructure has also been renewed, including the fountain and the so-called “Mushroom”, a popular meeting point of Budapest citizens. The total cost of the investment, which took five months, reached HUF 509 million. The Municipality of Budapest supported the project with a sum of HUF 295 million.
