Sister city relations will be established between Krakow and Budapest, as the General Assembly of Budapest has unanimously adopted the decision on that matter.
In March 2016 Mayor István Tarlós has received in his office the Mayor of Krakow, Jacek Majchrowski. During their meeting in Budapest, the two city leaders have agreed that both for Budapest and Krakow it is outstandingly important to tighten the relations between the two cities and the two countries. They agreed to extend the fields of cooperation and to cultivate the traditional and friendly ties, thus they have affirmed their intention to conduct a sister city agreement.
These sister city relations have a symbolic meaning, as they are established between the Budapest, the “capital of the nation” and Krakow, the Polish “royal capital”. Beside the cultivation of traditional historic relations, the aim of the sister city agreement is to develop closer and more efficient cooperation between the two cities.
The sister city agreement emphasizes the importance of cooperation in the field of cultural life, protection of the cultural and built heritage, the development of tourism, and it puts emphasis on youth and sports relations as well. In accordance with the plans, Mayor István Tarlós payed a visit to Krakow in June 2017, and signed there the above agreement.
