The main event of the international energy saving action, organized by WWF in Budapest, was held on Saturday 19 March, in the Palace of Arts.
The Hungarian Capital has joined the initiative for the tenth time, in the framework of which the city lights of Budapest had been turned off for an hour, between 20.30 and 21.30, thanks to the cooperation of BDK municipal city lighting company and the Elmű. During the one-hour operational brake more than 1400 kWh of energy was spared.
At all 200 venues operated by BDK, such as the Buda Castle, the Parliament, or bridges like the Chain Bridge, the Margit híd and Szabadság híd, the lighting had been turned off and on with the help of a radio-controlled circular mechanism.
Within this years’s action 7000 famous landmarks and monuments of 178 countries had darkened for Earth Hour. In Budapest spectators could also see the most beautiful pictures of Hungarian national parks, taken for the country’s nature photography contest. On the terrace of Ludwig Museum the Főkert Nonprofit municipal gardening company has placed 100 pansies in the shape of the event’s logo, and in the Bartók Béla National Concert Hall the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra performed a concert with the conduction of Zoltán Kocsis.
