A public square in Józsefváros, Budapest has been named after Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia at the official inauguration ceremony with the participation of vice mayor Tamás Szentes, Zviad Chumburidze, Ambassador of Georgia and Péterné Sántha, vice mayor of Józsefváros. The General Assembly of Budapest decided on the renaming of Vagon square at its meeting on February 27.
“The economic and cultural intertwining of the two capitals is a natural demand. The citizens of the two nations, which have similar history and cultural roots, are thinking similarly about their present and their nation’s future as well. In this regard, freedom and sovereignty are the greatest treasures.” – Tamás Szentes emphasized. The vice mayor also mentioned that the Hungarian Government has articulated its intent to support the Georgian Euro-Atlantic commitment and allied efforts.
This is not the first public area signboard related to Georgia. The monument and square dedicated to the 12th-13th century Georgian poet Shota Rustaveli was inaugurated by the two heads of state with the assistance of Ambassador Chumburidze in Spring 2011. In Tbilisi, two streets had been previously dedicated to the memory of Sándor Petőfi and Mihály Zichy.
