The capital city will request the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the Budapest University of Technology and Economics Department of Geotechnics for expert’s opinion concerning the issue of the flood wall along Római-part (the Roman Coast in Óbuda), announced István Tarlós. During his press conference on Tuesday, the Mayor also added that he will initiate law amendment so that Római-part might be classified as a building zone, where exclusively sports and recreational facilities could be built.
István Tarlós has emphasized that the natural passage of the coast will not disappear, neither will the pebbles or shells. The beach will remain intact, moreover it will be extended northward. The elements of the wall will not be stored in place, those will only be mounted during a flood; hence when there are no floods, visitors will have a 4-meter wide walkway along the Római-part.
The General Assembly of Budapest approved the proposal for building the flood wall along Római-part at its meeting on February 22, thus the capital city has solved the issue of a problem that has been unresolved for twenty years. Római-part is the remaining last critical reach of the river Danube, where merely 6 cm prevented the river from flooding Csillaghegy and Békásmegyer during the flood in 2002.
