The city lighting of Budapest has been turned off Saturday evening for an hour. Hungary’s largest candle was burning, illuminating the event venue. The capital city has joined the WWF’s Earth Hour among the first, for seven years it has drawn people’s attention to the fight against climate change.
On that day we draw residents’, companies’, institutions’ and governments’ attention worldwide to problems caused by environment pollution and overconsumption, said Gábor Bagdy. The Deputy Mayor added that on the list of Economist Intelligence Unit, comparing the competitiveness of 120 cities, Budapest is ranked first based on its natural environment.
The lights of Buda Castle, Liberty Bridge (Szabadság híd), Chain Bridge (Lánchíd), the Parliament Building, and the promenade along the Danube banks have been turned off. Meanwhile a 5-meter high giant candle was burning, which was lit in the roof garden by climber Zsolt Erőss. During the hour-long darkness fire-jugglers, drummers and light-painters entertained the crowd of thousands.
