The realization of Budapest’s new bike sharing system (Bubi) reached another milestone: on behalf of the Municipality of the City of Budapest, the tendering procedure has been launched by the Centre for Budapest Transport (BKK), whose winner will build and operate the new system.
The aim of Bubi is twofold: the new system provides the comfort and speed of urban cycling to people who for some reason cannot or do not want to use their own bikes, who commute to Budapest, who are compelled to choose another means of transport (take public transport or drive a car) in some part of the day, or who may not even have an own bike. Another aim is that bikes should only be in use during the time of the trip and to have the more people to use the same bike on the same day.
Both regular and occasional users of Bubi can take the bikes for a charge, while the first half an hour is free of charge. Docking stations will be found in 300-500 m distance in downtown area. In the first phase, the system will be built in the area of the university campus in South Buda, Víziváros in Buda, downtown in the Pest side, Terézváros, Erzsébetváros, and the inner parts of Újlipótváros, Ferencváros, Józsefváros, extending east to the Városliget (City Park).
