A rare kind of ungulate was born in Budapest Zoo. A member of the Mhorr gazelle colony in the Savanna complex, Evita, the thirteen-year-old female from Berlin gave birth to its offspring on Thursday. The newcomer, which is a male and got the name Ebo, instead of the mother’s milk now gets special nutrition every two and a half hours, as it has proven to be a successful method of nurturing gazelles.
The Mhorr gazelle is a native species of dama gazelle living in Northwest Africa, Morocco, and southern Sahara. Nowadays it is one of the most endangered ungulates, since there are no such gazelles left, living in their natural habitat. The Budapest Zoo has been engaged in the breeding program of gazelles since 2008. Since 2009 the reproduction of gazelles is regular in the Budapest Zoo.
