Since 1 March 2015 twenty-eight brand new, diesel-powered hybrid buses are in operation in Budapest, and with that it is one of the largest diesel-electric bus fleets of Europe.
In the framework of the vehicle stock development project launched as part of the programme of Mayor István Tarlós, hybrid buses are oprated along lines 5, 7, and 9 during all the week round since 1st March. Environmental awareness is crucial for the Municipality of Budapest and BKK, their aim is to support public transport services of the capital city with low-emission, modern vehicles. Through this development Budapest has joined a group of metropolises, where also environmentally friendly hybrid-powered buses are running on the roads.
At speed of 10-20 kilometers per hour the vehicles are using solely electric power, and thus leaving the bus stops becomes nioseless and smokeless. The aim of BKK is to operate exclusively low-floor buses across the whole area of Budapest by 2018.
