Giraffe baby was born in Budapest Zoo

The thirtieth giraffe baby in the history of the Budapest Zoo was born on 31st January. The newcomer, as it happens among ungulate, a few hours after its birth was already standing, and could reach the mother’s breasts. On the day of its birth the newcomer was 170 cm tall, and it has already grown since that, its height now exceeds 180 cm.

Now the nurturers could identify the sex of the baby giraffe, it is a male, and has already got a name. They have named the newcomer Ikinya. This name is the most popular one among the most populous ethnic group of Kenya, the kikuje, the name itself means “one step”.

Giraffes, native to Africa, have spread over considerably large areas, though the territory of their natural habitat has significantly shrunk over the last hundred years due to impact of human activities.
