The Budapest Festival Orchestra performed at the opening of the renewed Open-air Stage of Margaret Island. At the event on July 2nd, which was due to be held originally on June 19th, on the day of Hungarian Freedom, but postponed due to the flooding, Mayor István Tarlós has welcomed the audience. (This year the General Assembly of Budapest has chosen 15 honorary citizens, who have received their award on June 19th.)
István Tarlós has recalled in his opening speech that last soviet soldiers have left Hungary on 19 June 1991. He emphasized that this day is an important historical memory for us, of which we have to remember. In order to be able to continue the future developments, we need people, who we may look up to, who’s work we can keep in our mind, said István Tarlós.
The General Assembly of Budapest has decided to refurbish the Open-air Stage of Margaret Island in February this year. For the project the government has provided 350 million HUF, and the Municipality of Budapest has added 358 million HUF, thus the facility has received more than 700 million HUF for its renovation, since previously it had been pronounced unsafe and dangerous.
